Leaders exhibit many common behaviors!  In this highly interactive session, participants will learn the five fundamental behaviors leaders share.  These behaviors were identified thru research by James Kouzes and Barry Posner who shared their findings in the very successful book, The Leadership Challenge.   Participants will conduct some self-evaluation and learn what behaviors need to be enhanced to become the best leaders they can be!

At times our jobs require us to do things outside of our normal skillsets. Things such as creating agendas, invites, programs, and flyers make some of us cringe because we feel like we didn’t get the “creative” gene when we were born. This session is not designed to make you a graphic design guru. However, you will learn about some free – and low-cost – programs to make your creations look like they were professionally made. With a few easy tech tips, even the “creatively challenged” can transform ideas and messages into finished products that will make them shine.

Feedback  2:15-3:10 p.m.  
This course presents constructive approaches to giving and receiving feedback.  Discussion highlights the role that effective feedback plays in building strong employee relationships and in avoiding performance and productivity problems.  Participants will learn ways to offer feedback in a manner that is productive and objective rather than critical and personal, and ways to receive feedback in a proactive and appreciative manner. 

Balance  3:20-4:15 p.m.
This course reviews ways for individuals to create a sense of balance in their life and reduce stress.  Discussion reviews the danger of imbalance, the importance of defining priorities, the power of choice, and the benefit of protecting boundaries.  Participants will be given an opportunity to assess the level of control they feel in their own life and identify specific strategies they can employ to increase their sense of satisfaction.

8:30 am     All Aboard! Planning and Delivering an Effective New Director Orientation

Over the next decade, a new generation of co-op leaders will be in electric co-op boardrooms. They are likely to be younger and from more diverse backgrounds, reflecting the changing demographics of Rural America today.  Will they be up to the task? This workshop will focus on the planning and delivery of a highly effective orientation program that includes what a new director needs to know; who should be involved, the structure and length of an orientation that’s right for your co-op, as well as what materials might be helpful to the new director.

Our Presenters

 

Paula J. King is an Employee Education & Development Trainer with Optima Health.  She holds a degree in Psychology and English and her professional experience in the field of training and development spans over two decades.  Over that time, Paula has worked with both public and private sector organizations, designing comprehensive on-boarding programs, facilitating compliance and soft skills trainings, supporting leadership development of supervisory- and executive-level personnel, and advising clients on effective learning transfer practices. 

Paula has been with Optima since 2008 and has facilitated over 1,500 hours of employee assistance program training.  She has contagious passion for personal and professional development and is deeply committed to her clients in this effort.

 

Pat Mangan serves as NRECA’s director of governance education and is responsible for strategic planning and development of curricula and educational programs to meet the needs of electric cooperative directors. Pat’s responsibilities also include the planning and development of NRECA’s annual Directors Conference and serving as an instructor of governance courses. He is a member of the American Society of Association Executives holding the Certified Association Executive (CAE) certification since 2005. He is also a member and Governance Fellow at the National Association of Corporate Directors. Pat holds a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, New York and a master’s degree in Educational Media and Instructional Design from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

 

Possessing the gift-of-gab and a servant’s heart, Jameo Pollock believes that learning can be fun and that life is too short to be miserable. He provides educational, inspirational, and entertaining speaker and training series in the areas of leadership, communication, decision-making, career planning, and life skills development. Regarded as an enthusiastic and encouraging speaker, he is a lifelong learner, omnivorous and voracious reader, and teacher at heart.

Formerly, he has been a general manager, senior director, master fitness, logistician, and an Airborne Combat veteran for the U.S. Army. He is currently the Workforce Development Training Coordinator of Continuing Education and adjunct professor for the Community College Workforce Alliance at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College and John Tyler Community College.

He has appeared in the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the Herald Progress, Richmond Magazine (where he was selected as the 2007 Best Personal Trainer) and on the radio with Miss Community Clovia on KISS FM, Bill Bevins on Lite 98, and Jack and Jen on 103.7. Jameo has created podcasts, written blogs, and spoken at colleges, churches, conferences, summits, and private organizations throughout Virginia.

Jameo has proven repeatedly his flexibility in responding to change and his ability to ‘wear many hats’ in an effort to meet and exceed goals and challenges. Although he will always keep one foot firmly planted in the business world, his druthers are teaching and sharing his experiences with others in the hope of teaching valuable life lessons.

He is the author of Mirrored Echoes: A Myrna Sontiago Novella and the upcoming book Serial Rain.

Lynne Richardson is Dean of the College of Business at the University of Mary Washington.  She previously served as business dean at Mississippi State and Ball State (IN).  Lynne earned her PhD in Marketing from the University of Alabama.  She has been active in each community in which she has lived serving on Boards of Directors for three Rotary Clubs, two United Ways, and several other nonprofits, as well as on the Boards for a hospital and bank.  She has served as a Girl Scout leader in three councils and as President of the Birmingham Chapter of the American Marketing Association.  Lynne is married to Woody and they are the proud parents of two current Peace Corps volunteers and a senior in college!
