Mereta Landes
Mereta Elaine Kiracofe Landes passed away on June 27 in Bridgewater, Va, at 104. Mereta had an amazing life. She was the 1990 recipient of the Unsung Virginian Award and the mother of co-op stalwart Hugh Landes, the former general manager of BARC Electric Cooperative in Millboro. A graduate of Bridgewater High School, she sold Avon for 62 years, as well as other retail sales.
She was an active member of First United Methodist Church, where she coordinated rummage sales, and was a lifetime member of United Methodist Women. In her nearly 40 years of collecting and distributing clothing for her church, she helped provide more than $170,000 to fill a variety of needs for United Methodist and less-fortunate families, preserving their pride and helping them avoid seeking charity.
