S&N Communications joined VMDAEC and its member co-ops for an informational meeting about the Association’s newest offering through its training facility — a fiber technician apprenticeship program. Senior Director of Fiber Services Andy Gibson led the discussion with assistance from Area Manager Joy Yount.
Topics of interest were mainly related to program content and structure. Co-op attendees voiced support for the cohort model, similar to the current programs offered at the Training Center. Program developers sought feedback to ensure training meets the needs and expectations of the member co-ops and others. Some expressed concerns about techs being away from their crews for long durations. All feedback was carefully taken under consideration.
Also presenting was Deborah Kish, vice president of research and development for the Fiber Broadband Association, who provided some background on the FBA’s OpTic Path curriculum to be used by the Association.
“We are extremely excited to offer this new opportunity for much needed professional, accredited training,” said Todd Butcher, VMDAEC safety training manager. “We expect the training program to begin in early 2023.”
