Committed to improving quality of life with a quality education, electric cooperatives in Virginia, Maryland and Delaware will begin accepting applications for their scholarship program on Feb. 1 from high school seniors who intend to pursue higher education or trade school studies.

Scholarships, awarded by the Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives Education Scholarship Foundation, have been received by more than 1,000 graduating high school students since 2001 and will surpass $1 million in 2024. “As the Association of Electric Cooperatives celebrates its 80th year of service supporting those who keep the lights on, the Foundation is equally proud to reach the $1 million milestone in 2024,” says Sam Brumberg, VMDAEC vice president and Foundation coordinator.

Any high school or home-schooled senior graduating in spring 2024, and whose primary residence is served by one of VMDAEC’s 16 member cooperatives, is eligible to apply for a $1,000 scholarship to be applied to a two- or four-year college or trade school.

The deadline for applications is April 1. Award recipients will be notified no later than June 1. The online application and additional information are available at vmdaec.com/scholarship.

Applicants must be entering their first semester at a post-secondary or technical/trade school in fall 2024. Scholarship funds, which will be sent directly to the educational institution, must be used toward tuition, student fees, room and board, or textbooks.

The Foundation board of directors will select recipients based on the following weighted criteria: financial need at 40%, academic achievement at 40% and personal statement at 20%. Questions about donations and the application process should be directed to [email protected].
