The staff of Cooperative Living magazine recently received recognition for excellence in a publication as part of the annual Marcom Awards competition.
Deputy Editor Laura Emery and Editor Steven Johnson both won gold awards from Marcom for their feature articles in the print media/writing category. Emery won for “Aiming High,” her profile of Genevie Boarman, the first female electric cooperative lineworker in Virginia. The article appeared in the January 2020 issue of the magazine. Johnson won for “History Hidden in the Walls,” which detailed the Edwin Washington Project, a years-long effort to trace the history of educational segregation in Loudoun County, Va. It appeared in the May 2021 issue.
The design team, led by Creative Services Coordinator John Grott, received an honorable mention award for the interior of the January 2021 magazine, entitled “When Covid Strikes,” a look at how a rural health care facility dealt with the pandemic.
Administered by the Association of Marketing and Communication Professionals, the Marcom Awards represent one of the largest, most-respected creative competitions in the world. Each year about 6,500 print and digital entries are submitted from dozens of countries.
