The co-op world was saddened July 25 with news of the death of Cecil Viverette of heart complications. He was 80.
Viverette was a towering figure in the VMD family. Following graduation from North Carolina State University and military service, he entered the co-op world in 1965 at then-Virginia Electric Cooperative. During his long career, he was instrumental in VEC’s 1980 consolidation with Northern Piedmont Electric Cooperative to form Rappahannock Electric Cooperative.
In 1988, he became president and CEO of REC. He also served on the board of directors of Old Dominion Electric Cooperative and the VMD Association. Known as “Sonny,” after retirement, he moved to South Carolina in 2004 and served on the board of the South Carolina Public Service Authority.
The family asks that memorial contributions be made online to Hilton Head Heroes, or by mail at P.O. Box 6689, Hilton Head, SC 29938.
